SOCIETY NEWS AND EVENTS

ASPS CONGRESS, PERTH, 18th/19th APRIL 2008

The annual Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies Congress takes place over the weekend of 18/19th April 2008 in the Dewar Centre, Perth. This venue offers much more space and improved facilities than Falkirk, is proving very popular. This year the host Society is Ayrshire, as the Society celebrates its 70th anniversary.

PRESIDENTS NIGHT

This years Presidential Display will be given by Ian Smith on the 11th September. Among the material displayed will be KIng Faisal II issues of Iraq, the Talyllyn Railway, and a philatelic version of "It'll be alright on the Night"!

JUNIOR COMPETITION NIGHT

March 4th 2008 will be one of our busiest evenings of the session, as it forms our Junior Competition Night. This has become increasingly popular as more and more young collectors take part in the various classes. Entrants who are placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd receive cash prizes donated by the Society, together with a wide range of stamps, covers, and other philatelic items of value donated by philatelic bureaux from around the world.

SOCIETY NEWSLETTER

For several years now Ian Barker has produced a regular newsletter, with up to 4 issues per year, including news of the society, members articles, forthcoming events and so on.

SOCIETY AUCTION

Every year the Society holds an "auction" where members can buy and sell a wide range of material. This is one of the most popular nights of the year, and is always well attended.

SOUTH WEST CONGRESS

This year's South West Congress is being hosted by Old Eastwood, and takes place on Saturday, 6th October, 2007, in its usual setting of Queen Margaret Academy, Ayr.

SCOTEX

SCOTEX this year is on the 20/21st October 2007, in the Dewar Centre in Perth.

VISITING SPEAKERS

As ever, a number of interesting speakers are visiting the Society, commencing with Russell Walker and his famous "Camels", followed by Jim Crawford and his fascinating "Tristan Da Cunha". The momentous events of the American Civil War are covered by Gordon Shepherd in January, and we welcome Margaret Morris in March with her "Greenland". In addition we have three visiting societies, including a welcome visit from South of the Border, in the shape of Newcastle Upon Tyne Philatelic Society.
