Bahrain Postal History - India Overprinted Bahrain - On Cover

Vendor Details

These items (mostly covers with one or two "pieces" and an odd stamp) are listed in the sequence of the Cancellation Type, according to the categorisation by Neil Donaldson in his excellent "The Postal Agencies of Eastern Arabia and the Gulf" (1975) and its "Supplement" (1994). Many of the cancellations are either early dated examples or late dated examples and some are the very earliest or very latest known. However, almost all of the items have other aspects of interest.
Some of the pictures are quite dark when viewed at my normal "reading brightness" but are fine when I turn brightness up.

Cancellation by Receivers - Donaldson types 5, 5A, 5B, and 5C
BPH2/01Cancellation Usage of Donaldson Type 5 on a pair of related covers.
Two very attractive 1934 covers to U.K. carrying stamps unusually cancelled by strikes of the (Don Type 5) receiver handstamps dated 19 APR 34. The first cover (view) carries overprinted stamps (SG 7,8,9,10,11) cancelled by three strikes of the handstamp. Note that the centre strike shows the day (19) in line with the month and year. The other two strikes show the 19 raised. The raised 19 is carried onto the second (view) cover (SG 2,3,4,5,6 and 12). Both covers also show (Don type 18) the boxed BAHRAIN / PERSIAN GULF DISTRICT handstamp applied to blank registration labels. These are not common.
It appears that these two covers are from a philatelicly inspired mailing. One or two others in and around this range of registration serial numbers have been seen, similarly cancelled. This may indicate that the very late usage of this handstamp was occasioned by a special situation e.g. 1934 first flight covers. Regardless of this conjecture, these are scarce marking and have passed through the mail.

BPH2/02Cancellation Usage of Donaldson Type 5C.
A pair of India KG VI 2 Rupees, overprinted BAHRAIN and cancelled by a fine strike of the (Don type 5C) handstamp dated 12 SEP 47 (view). It is believed that this device was intended as a receiver mark. Donaldson records occasional cancellation usage between 16.5.35 and 14.2.49 but I have found only this one example of usage during the period of the Indian Post Office and I conclude that usage was rare. With stamps of such a high face value, this use was most likely on Registered mail. Stamps only, not on cover. (view)

The Large Killer - Donaldson type 6
The most common cancellation of the Indian overprint period. Usage is recorded from11/5/24 through to 1940.
BPH2/03A related pair of airmail cover to England carrying the first issue of the stamps of India overprinted BAHRAIN. The sender omitted to register the covers though the affixed postage was ample to cover that service. This suggests that though philatelicly inspired, the covers are private, not commercial. The stamps ( 1/2 A, 9 Ps, 1A, 1A3Ps, 2A and 3A on 1st cover and 1 Rupee on the 2nd cover) are cancelled by strikes of the large killer dated 16 AUG 33. Gibbons indicate that the full set of the first overprints were released on the 10th August, 1933. Thus these two covers were created during the first week of issue. For no apparent reason, the 3 pies (lowest) value has been omitted. This may indicate that the overprinted 3 pies was not available over the post office counter in that first week of issue. (Harmers auction 18/12/2001, lot 820 is claimed to be the earliest recorded usage of 3 Ps on 8 NOV 33). An interesting feature is the use of the Newcastle-On-Tyne cds on a GB KGV 1/2d to establish the year dating of these covers, the Bahrain cancellations being less than perfect examples View. £ 160 pair

Bahrain Air cds - Donaldson type 7
BPH2/05 A most unusual 1938 cover to U.K., philatelically inspired and carrying a full set of then current definitives (i.e. 1934 1/2A,1A,2As,3As and 4As and 1933 original issue of all other values). The 2R and 5R are extremely rare on any cover. Note that a manuscript inscription is smudged and the 3Ps is damaged.
The stamps are cancelled by strikes of the BAHRAIN AIR cds dated 13 DEC 38. The reverse of the cover (view) carries a pre-numbered Registration label with a strike, in black, of the boxed BAHRAIN / PERSIAN GULF DISTRICT handstamp (itself scarce) and a violet cachet identifying the origin as the Master of Customs/and Ports Affairs / BAHREIN. The cover also carries a boxed cachet EAT / A / HERRING /A / WEEK, in violet. The background to this cachet is not known. A vertical crease between the stamps and the address but still a fantastic cover with the only 5R used on cover that I have ever seen !! View
