Venue for The 1st British Open Golf Championship - 1860

This section of the site is designed to welcome the thousands who visit us in Prestwick every year. The town has a number of good Hotels and many Bed & Breakfast establishments.

The site will also be of interest to potential residents, and to ex-residents around the world who want to stay in touch. We hope that existing residents will also find the site interesting and we welcome your feedback.

Yes, the first paragraph does say "visit us". With an owner who lived and went to school in the Prestwick, IntAYRnet is very much a local company, very well placed to guide you around the town and the surrounding area.

Prospective visitors are most welcome to print any extracts from this site to help get the best from a visit or holiday in the town.

Enthusiasts will know that Prestwick was the venue of the first Open Championship but not everyone will be aware of the part played by the Red Lion Hotel.
It was here in 1851 that fifty (or so) gentlemen formed the Prestwick Golf Club. In 1860 the club announced a competition which was open to non-members of the club.
There were only eight entrants in the first year. Nevertheless the Open Championship was born. In 1868/70 (Young) Tom Morris won the competition three years running and thereby won the trophy (a belt) outright. The replacement, a Claret Jug, continues as the Open trophy to this day. Above, we see the Cross with the Red Lion on the right.

Today, Prestwick is a typical West of Scotland residential and holiday town, wonderful in summer and occasionally wild in winter. When we took this photograph (below), it was hard to imagine that a few months later we would be sharing our town with thousands of visitors enjoying balmy summer weather to watch the Open Golf Championship a few miles away in Troon..

The photo was taken on the morning of February 24th, 1997.

February 24th brought GALES !!!.

This was the view of Prestwick promenade from inside the car.

Despite the wind, the people of Prestwick went about their business and Prestwick Airport was operating as normal. We watched a cargo jumbo climb into the sky and we set of home for a bowl of hot soup !!!!

Please feel free to browse around. We hope you enjoy it and that it helps you to plan. ......... and we look forward to your visit in the coming months
