"I would just like to say what great pleasure your site about Prestwick has given me. It has brought great memories of my childhood flooding back. I lived in Prestwick between 1952 - 1959 I lived with my parents and two brothers at 7, Burnside Gardens, off Kirk Street. The bungalow backed on to St. Cuthbert's golf club. I went to the public school and then on to Prestwick High.
I enjoyed the photo of the Bathing pool. I recall that it used to cost 4p to swim for as long as you wanted or you could buy a season ticket for ten shillings. Your item spoke about the temp. of the water, as I recall they used to mark the temp. of the water on a board at the entrance.
As for your item about the main street, yes I recall Coopers the grocers, and yes there was always a wonderful smell of coffee. You spoke about the Broadway cinema. Yes Saturday mornings film for sixpence what a bargain.
I was in the cubs. They used to meet at the South church opposite Woolworths on Main St. I then moved on to the scouts. The 45th Ayrshire as I remember they use to meet at the drill hall on Temple Rigg St. off Kirk St. The scout master was Jimmy Hunter.
I could go on for hours if you wanted or provide you with further information if you would like. Please feel free to contact me. Information about the first jet airliner ever to visit Prestwick the Pan Am Boeing 707 or the visit of the cowboy and movie star Roy Rodgers and his horse Trigger at Prestwick airport."
So we have asked Dave to let us have some more gems from the years gone by.
