Adamton, Monkton and Ayr Academy in the '70s

Helen (Wemyss) Minshall writes:

"I've just been planning my holidays and came across the Ayr website. I lived at a tiny little place called Adamton, hidden behind the airport runway beyond Monkton, between 1968 and 1980, when I left the area to go to Music college in Manchester. I spent 6 happy years at Ayr Academy between 1974 and 1980, where I made so many good friends, some of whom I still keep in touch with. I visit Ayr every summer and usually stay at the Caledonian Hotel with my mum and children.

As a child growing up in Ayrshire, in a tiny place off the bus route, I did not appreciate the lovely countryside and quality of my surroundings. Now I love to come back for holidays. Each time I walk down the High Street it is as if time has stood still. Everything is so familiar. I really look forward to my visits to Ayr. I have many memories of playing the tuba with the Ayr Benquhat Brass Band between 1978 and 1980, and also with the Ayr Area Schools Brass Band.

As far as memories go, I would love to hear from any of my former classmates from Ayr Academy. My maiden name was Helen Wemyss. I have fond memories of many of my former teachers - Music teachers Miss Cunningham and Miss McIlwraith, and my wonderful brass teacher George White, Russian teacher Mr Hunt, French teachers Mrs Le Harivel and Mr Coleman, Italian Teacher Miss Sinton, Biology teachers Dr Jackson and Miss Law.

I'm teaching now in Bolton. I'm a brass peripatetic teacher and I love the job. I also do a lot of playing in jazz bands etc. I'd love to hear from anyone from my past. Please publish my e mail address. Looking forward to my holiday in Ayrshire next week
