Summer Holidays in the 1940s and 50s

June McCarthy was a regular summer visitor to relatives who owned some of the shops in Troon. She writes:

As soon as school was out for the Summer, it was time to go to TROON.
I was lucky to have a grandaunt and granduncle who lived at 47 Eglinton Crescent.

Most days we would go to the beach via Lochend Road. In those days, there were "Chalets" right on the sand. The swimming pool was also a wonderful treat.

Uncle Sandy, (Alexander Gardiner Jr.), owned a family grocery store on Portland Street. In later times his shop was sold to the Cooperative Society.
Aunt Peg, (Margaret Brown), owned a millinery shop, also on Portland Street. She and her half-sister Daisy Hendry had joint ownership of the shop, "Brown and Hendry" This shop was sold and became a sporting goods store but it did change hands very many times while I was still a visitor to Troon.
Aunt Peg and I would enjoy day trips to Kilmarnock and visiting friends throughout the Ayrshire area.

These happy days started for me in the late 1940s and early 1950s. My memories of Troon are unforgettable.
