Malcolm Pattman lived in Prestwick in the 50s and 60s and writes ……
Discovered the site by accident, wow lots of memories.
I lived in Prestwick from being 6 months until I was 17, born in 1949. We lived in various rooms at first, Boydfield Ave, near the School… and then got a council house in Carnell Cres in Marchburn
I went to Prestwick Public, remember the little tuck shop opposite, and then what is now Prestwick Academy 61-65 and then to Ayr Academy for Highers in 65-7.
I remember some of the shops others have mentioned, also the Central café, the tower near the cross where you got the free orange juice, the taking back lemonade bottles for the deposits. Searching the golf courses for lost balls and selling then back to the golfers. The Tennis Courts where we played a lot and the fairs at the Toll.
The Pow Burn ……..following it right down to the estuary , the swimming pool, they had the temperature noted at the entrance, I remember 55 degrees and having swimming lessons !
Spent lots of time down by the sea, mainly off season, and there was the Youth Club some of us started in the Old Cronies Hall, on Sats, with Jimmy Smith, who worked for GPO telephones, other names such as Linda Buchanan who married John Mc Carthy (??)…, Billy………from Gleburn, and David Latta who is now a Doctor I think
Memories faded with age ! I have been away since 17 in England and now in Nottingham, pleased to hear from anyone, saw a few names which seemed vaguely familiar. They may remember my name as it was not Scots, my Mother was from Glasgow but my Father was English.
