Like Troon, Prestwick (population about 12,000) occupies a strip of land along the coast of the Firth of Clyde about 35 miles south-west of Glasgow, just north of Ayr, and immediately south of Prestwick Airport.
Prestwick has good rail connections to both the Town Station and that at the Airport.
Prestwick Airport is on the doorstep and Glasgow Airport just 45 minutes. If you plan to arrive by rail or air, In-com Taxis operate a reliable Meeting & Greeting service.
Prestwick Airport so dominates the geography of Prestwick that there are only three roads into the town.
The A79 runs from the roundabout junctions with the A77 and the A78 to the north, around the the main runway, across the doorstep of the terminal building and on through the town.
This accounts for two of the three access roads, one from the Airport, in the north, the second from Ayr in the south.
The third access to Prestwich is the B743, an exit from the A77 (Prestwick / Ayr by-pass) at the Whitletts roundabout which runs through the Heathfield commercial and residential districts to a junction with the A79.
The A79 runs south from the roundabout junctions with the A77 and A78 to the north of the town. The road provides good views of the Airport and there are a couple of lay-bys for spectating. Visitors who have not been this way for a couple of years may be surprised to encounter a new roundabout providing easier entry and exit from the Airport. Three hundred yards further on, another new roundabout offers exits (left) to the Airport Driving Range, (straight) to the Industrial Estate and back of Prestwick, and (right) to the town centre, passing Monkton North Parish Church or the left.
The A79 from the south is Prestwick Road running from Ayr town centre, changing to (not very original) Ayr Road when it enters Prestwick at the Heathfield traffic lights.
The first building of note is the Centrum, home of the Ayr Scottish Eagles ice-hockey team.
The B743 provides speedy access to the southern end of Prestwick. The road runs through a commercial area with an out-of-town shopping complex on the right and a number of timber and building material merchants on either side. Until recently, Heathfield Hospital was the major landmark of this area. Most of the hospital was closed a few years ago and its activities were transferred to the new Ayr Hospital on the Dalmellington Road. The area is now residential, with the road leading to traffic lights at a x-roads with the A79 which runs north/south through the town.
