Venue of The Open Golf Championship - 1997 | ![]() |
The 2004 Open Championship will be played at Royal Troon from July 15-18. Royal Troon last hosted the British Open Golf Championship, for the seventh time, in July 1997. Hundreds of thousands of people visited us during the Championship and once again the sun shone and the sea sparkled. That year, for the fifth time in a row in Troon, the Claret Jug was lifted by an American golfer, Justin Leonard.
Between Championships Troon returns to its normal role of a dormitory town which also offers a golfers' paradise all year round (the local final qualifying courses for the 2004 Open are Glasgow Gailes, Irvine, Turnberry Kintyre and Western Gailes, all just a short drive from Troon), a superb family holiday for the summer months, and great base for touring Burns Country and the glorious south west of Scotland.
Our Hotels and Bed & Breakfasts welcome all visitors and you can find details of Self-catering Accommodation. In our pages you will find contact details and information to help you choose.
The site will also be of interest to potential residents and to ex-residents around the world who want to stay in touch. We hope that existing residents will also find the site interesting and we welcome your feedback.

One February morning we walked our wee cairn terrier in glorious winter sunshine. Heading south from the town for about a mile along the paved promenade, we came to the Clubhouse and the first tee of the Royal Troon course. Here we strolled down onto the hard sand at the water's edge, walking parallel to the golf course and watching the curlews, gulls, and small birds sweeping and whirling over the Black Rock.
That was early in 1996. A few years have gone by and we are now walking a different cairn terrier but the website is still going and growing. |
