The Royal Troon Golf Club

The Open Championship was played over the old course at Royal Troon Golf Club from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th July, 1997. Thousands of visitors from around the world enjoyed this great sporting event played in perfect weather with bright sunshine, mainly still but with an occasional slight breeze from a sparkling sea.

On the course, for the fifth time in succession in Troon, the Claret Jug was lifted by an American golfer. Following Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Watson and Mark Calcavecchia, Justin Leonard was named Champion Golfer of 1997. Four very steady but determined days with the occasional touch of inspiration brought Justin a deserved success which he took with a dignity which he retained through to his victory speech at the award ceremony.

Whilst they were here, many allowed time to explore Troon and the beautiful Burns Country. For some it was a new experience and for others a chance to meet auld acquaintances. If you are trying to contact someone in Ayrshire, or looking for someone who has left Ayrshire, or just looking for a golfing buddy from the past, why not try our Where Are They Now ? page ?

Maybe you didn't make it to Troon for the Open but you owe it to yourself to visit soon. Please take this opportunity to view our selection of B & Bs, Self-catering Accommodation and Hotels, all of which offer golfing breaks throughout the year.
