ALLOWAY

No visit to Ayrshire is complete without a pilgrimage to Alloway, birthplace of its most famous son Robert Burns.

There are many fine publications telling of the attractions and history of this famous village we offer only a brief outline.

The thatched cottage, built in 1757 by Burns father has been restored and contains many relics of his time. Burns was born on 25th January 1759 and later documented the event in verse .

"Our monarch's hindmost year but ane
Was five and twenty days begun,
'Twas then a blast o' Janwar win'
Blew hansel in on Robin.

Indeed the weather was so bad at the time of his birth that part of the cottage collapsed and the family had to move in with neighbours until the repairs were completed.
The museum beside the cottage is well laid out and contains many interesting pieces.
You may continue to read the text while the picture is loading Walking towards the River Doon visit The Tam o'Shanter Experience where you can learn about Burns life and work. On the opposite side if the street visit Kirk Alloway and think of Tam o'Shanter as he watched the "Warlocks and witches in a dance;" Look for the grave of Burns father. From the Kirk you will see Burns Monument and the road leading to the legendary Brig o'Doon. Tam o'Shanter managed to flee from the witches over the Brig ,as Burns says " A running stream they dare na cross". The witch however caught hold of the horse's tail
"Ae spring brought off her master hale,
But left behind her ain grey tail:" .

Crossing the road bridge and taking the B7024 will lead you by way of the High Road to Maybole. This is a beautiful country road to be taken slowly and enjoyed on a fine day as are many of the minor roads in this part of the country.
